GEMS is an invaluable program that provides local students exposure to Army leaders, researchers and engineers working in STEM careers with the DOD. It's inspiring to see this new generation be exposed to new opportunities

How long have you been at the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine?

I have been here for just about one year, I arrived summer 2023 after completing my Ph.D. at the University of Rhode Island.

How did you become interested in Soldier Nutrition and Performance?

While working as a clinical dietitian, I have always been interested in conducting research to determine whether our programs and interventions are effective. This led me to pursue graduate school. I'm excited to be here at USARIEM where I hope to conduct research to explore how eating behaviors and environments impact the health of our Soldiers.

What projects are you currently working on?

This summer, my primary focus is serving as the Lab Coordinator for the Gains in the Education of Math and Science Program. GEMS is a summer STEM program for rising 5th to 9th graders. We employ 28 high school and college students as Near Peer Mentors who work with 40 students per week over the course of 6-weeks. The mentors develop and teach lessons that involve coding, engineering projects, chemistry, and biology.

Additionally, I am assisting with data collection for active protocols and writing proposals for future research projects.

What aspects of your job do you love and find most gratifying?

I have really enjoyed meeting and learning from scientists who are true subject matter experts in their field of study. It has been rewarding to get to participate in research projects that will enhance and support Warfighter health and wellness.

What part of your job do you find to be the most difficult?

I want to make the most of my time here and learn as much as I can, so it is challenging because there are so many opportunities to get involved in and there's never enough time to do it all.

When you are not at the Institute, what do you like to do for fun?

I love to spend my time doing anything with my family, but we love to go to the beach or for hikes/walks. I have also recently started CrossFit and have found a great community there!
