Behind the Science with Staff Sgt. Michelle Ott, Military Nutrition Division Noncommissioned Officer in Charge

How long have you been at the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine?
I have now been with USARIEM for just under two years, and they have been great so far.
How did you become interested in Soldier Nutrition and Performance?
I became interested when I had a permanent change of position here and got to see what happens behind the scenes of the research that USARIEM conducts.
What projects are you currently working on?
I'm cross-trained in just about every protocol in the Military Nutrition Division, so I fill in gaps and hop around where I may be needed. Some of this fun involves meal prepping, processing body fluids, body scanning and chamber operating. My summers can get busier when I help out the Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science program.
What aspects of your job do you love and find most gratifying?
I love TDYs, working with my team, bringing people together and obtaining new skillsets. We have so much talent around us and seeing people light up when discussing what they are passionate about is gratifying.
What part of your job do you find to be the most difficult?
I try my best to have a work-life balance, which is always a work-in-progress.
When you are not at the Institute, what do you like to do for fun?
I like to recharge, which includes a bit of hibernation. I love spending time with my girlfriend and family. Hiking, exploring National Parks and cute coffee shops, and catching them all in Pokémon Go are all just some activities that keep me sane.
